The Secret of Lucianne Dove

Picture
Why is the spirit of a nineteenth century mining town soiled dove appearing to a twenty-first century disgruntled newspaper reporter?  Mickey McCoy is desperate to know. He feels a connection with this woman unlike any he’s ever known. Strange coincidences have brought him to Virginia City and he’s savvy enough to know that there are no coincidences in life. He’s savvy enough to know he’s supposed to help this spirit who has transcended time.

For decades, Mickey has harbored a dark secret. He did something wrong. It’s eating him alive and he wants to make up for it. But the years are passing. He’s getting older and is running out of time. Now this beguiling painted lady has come to him. If he can help her, he thinks maybe he can help himself. As it turns out, their issues are two sides of the same coin. Everyone wants their life to count for something. Maybe it’s not too late for Mickey to change the meaning of his life. And evidently, crossing the veil between life and death, it’s not too late for Lucianne.

Threading through Virginia City history, touching upon issues of the human heart, The Secret of Lucianne Dove is the story of two souls learning to forgive and reversing the legacies of their lives.

 Author in Virginia City

There can be no doubt that Virginia City inspired me to write this novel. I visited it three times before I finished. While some of the places in the story are from my imagination, many of the sites and elements are real: the place where Julia Bulette's house once stood, the Silver Queen Hotel, the cemetery, the corner of Union and Taylor, the trolley service that provides tours, the Delta Saloon, the newspaper office where Mark Twain worked, the Bucket of Blood--all real.

Chapel Playhouse

Picture
Rumors abound. The University of Brookdale’s abandoned old theater is haunted by a ghost that likes to kill. And the premonitions crusty psychic medium Mickey McCoy has been having say a pretty coed named Casia is in danger. She may be the next victim should she pass through its doors.

But is she in danger because of a ghost? It isn’t that Mickey doesn’t believe in ghosts. It’s that his psychic dreams, out-of-body experiences, and down-to-earth sleuthing are revealing issues that are far more complex. An eccentric Gothic Lit professor watches over the Chapel Playhouse. Casia’s dead mother is still hanging around, trying to run Casia’s life. And Casia has a major babe of a boyfriend with anger and abandonment issues related to the playhouse. Add to the mix the possibility that the person who died and supposedly haunts the theater may not really be dead and clearly Mickey has much to figure out.

As he weaves his way through a web of mysteries, many shocking facts come to light. And just as he zeroes in on what is really going on, a spontaneous remote viewing experience tells him Casia is inside the playhouse. Can he get to her in time?

Chapel Playhouse is a modern gothic tale filled with twists and turns. Just as you think you know what’s going on, along comes another surprise.

Inspiration for the Story

Chapel Playhouse was inspired by the real "haunted" theater on the University of Redlands campus where the author went to college. Click on photos below for captions.
