Denver, My Latest Book, Coincidence

PictureMe at Horace and Baby Doe Tabor's grave.
Denver is full of ghosts.  Not the kind that ghost hunters hunt.  The kind that are memories from the past.

I've visited Denver since I was a baby. It's my mother's hometown and my father lived there too. We have home movies that my grandfather took back in the 30s and 40s (and 50s and 60s too). Those movies include vacations they took to Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, Mt. Rushmore, Sequoia National Park and more.  I posted footage of their Mt. Rushmore visit on Youtube.  You can see blasting as the Mt. Rushmore monument is being built. The faces of Lincoln and Roosevelt aren't visible yet.

I visited Denver at the end of June this year for a memorial for my aunt. And while I was there took the opportunity to do some research for my latest book. It's set in Denver in 1944.I already did a post about Baby Doe Tabor (a part of this book) and how my aunt kept clippings from 1935 when Baby Doe died and how my cousin gave me those clippings after my aunt passed. I didn't know she had them.

Well, now a couple more "coincidences" have occurred related to writing this book which is a paranormal historical romance.

I'm using elements from my family history in the story. My mother's family lived on Downing Street. My character lives on Downing Street. My grandfather had their house torn down and an office building erected when zoning laws changed in the 1950s.  My character sells his Downing Street house to a developer in 1944 who has the foresight to know zoning laws will change. The developer plans to tear down the house.

Coincidence 1: In my story, my character's father was a professional photographer in the 1920s. I recently learned from my cousin that my great grandfather was an amateur photographer.

Coincidence 2: I have the Denver jail in my story. I wanted to know where it was located. I bought a 1947 Denver map off of Ebay when I got home from my trip. It shows where the jail was located.  And low and behold.  It's the site where my sister and I were hit by a Denver City bus - the corner of Colfax and Speer. We stood in the parking lot where the building stood doing the paperwork for the accident.  Below is a picture of our rental car. And next to it a blow up of the map.

    Here goes . . .

I write novels. I've written screenplays, short stories, newsletters, business communications and articles. I'm not great at thank you notes. My sister is, but she doesn't know it. I'm not much for blogging. Don't have something to say worth reading everyday. But this is a blog and we'll see what turns up.
