E. Van Lowe - Part II

It occurred to me that some of the points E. Van Lowe made should be mentioned and weren't in my last post.

Learn to finish what you start.
Learn to work on more than one project at a time.
He said he wasn't disciplined but he was motivated to win; having his books sell was winning.
He said we are all part of the pond and we needed to get out of the pond to get noticed. How do you do this? Well, that's the tricky part. You have to write something that breaks away and . . . that's the sixty-four dollar question, isn't it?
He said everybody has luck. Some more than others. (Interesting)

E. Van Lowe

Yesterday was my writers club (High Desert Branch of the California Writers Club) meeting and it was a good one. We were fortunate to have E. Van Lowe as our speaker. He gave a mostly inspirational talk about making it as a writer. He told us about his journey which was amazing in an "ordinary" guy sort of way.

He knew what he wanted. He went for it. He studied and wrote and wrote and wrote. Whenever the Universe (my word, not his) seemed to show him a new path, he adjusted his game plan. And because he constantly took action "luck" was on his side.  You need to read his bio to understand how much this man has accomplished.

The one thing he said I would question is the statement that he's not necessarily a "gifted" writer. (He may have used a different adjective.) His point was that "if he could do it then so could we."

I don't know. He must be fairly gifted to win first place in a Mark Taper Play Writing Contest and then have his play produced in more than one venue. He must be fairly gifted to win Emmys and be nominated for an Academy Away.

I'm going to read one of his novels now. Unfortunately for me, I don't like Young Adult fiction very much (except for books like The Hunger Games series). So far, though, his style is great. So we shall see.

Okay. It's official. I'm a Sara Gruen fan. Water for Elephants was perfect in my book.  From the very first page I had to know what was happening. I cared about the characters. Plot points unfolded exactly as they should. Everything, everything intrigued me. What a world these characters lived in. Redlighting. Who knew? I borrowed this book but now I have to buy it.

I made a new website for my The Secret of Lucianne Dove novel.  It's called I Love Virginia City, Nevada.  Check it out at www.IloveVirginiaCity.com.  I think I'm getting addicted to making websites.

    Here goes . . .

I write novels. I've written screenplays, short stories, newsletters, business communications and articles. I'm not great at thank you notes. My sister is, but she doesn't know it. I'm not much for blogging. Don't have something to say worth reading everyday. But this is a blog and we'll see what turns up.
